Toch een wat teleurstellend verloop uiteindelijk, zeker met die laatste rit. Shinhama is het hele jaar niet zo goed als ie andere jaren wel eens is.

Aan de andere kant, Shinhama is er over 4 jaar nog wel bij denk ik en Dubreuil lijkt me iemand die hier wel overheen komt. Die heeft natuurlijk ook al zijn wereldtitel.

Uiteindelijk wint toch wel degene die intrinsiek het beste lijkt.

In 1998 werd de beste Nederlander op de 500 ook 12e, Jan Bos. In 1994 werd Van Velde 21e. Dat was de laatste slechtere prestatie (en zo slecht zal het nooit meer worden lijkt me).

Zeker, een starter heeft ook maar heel kort de tijd om te beoordelen of iets vals is of niet. En je weet als starter van de 500 meter dat jouw keuzes een grote invloed hebben op de uitslag. Geen makkelijke taak.

Shinhama nog gewoon een rondje 25.0. Knap.

I'm not going to say any loud words here or throw accusations. My point here is that if there is a margin of error allowed for the false start to be invoked (such as being unstable in the starting position), then it was dismissed for Cha but applied very strictly to the last draw (Dubreuil in particular).

The question is whether Roland Steenbeck, the German starter, wasn't experienced enough to hold 500 m starts or was there some sort of psychological pressure involved that he couldn't handle. Previously, he was a starter in Stavanger (Team Sprint women, 1000 m women) and the European championships 2020 (Team Pursuit men) + most recently at the Olympic 5k. Which makes me think that he doesn't have enough practical experience at 500 m starts?

Perhaps your right and was is simply the wrong starter for the 500, not experienced enough.

You're welcome <3 yes, that is exactly my point. Before jumping into big and loud conclusions, some rationale should be found in the starting arrangements. Therefore, I wonder on what criteria the starters are being allocated to particular distances. Is being a good starter enough to be assigned to any distance as may be seen in Steenbeck's case? Or does a starter need to have enough practical experience on short/long distances and be assigned accordingly?

In any case, even if the latter option may not be very practical in application, I still believe that a starter should have held 500 m starts elsewhere on at least one occasion before being assigned as the Olympic 500 m starter.
