Er is een brief vanuit ISU gestuurd naar oa burgemeester Almaty en minister Sport in Kazakhstan over een renovatie van Medeo. En welke kansen dat biedt voor internationale competities krijgen.

Meer info uit Kazakhstan heb ik nog niet gekregen. Het is ook nog niet gezegd dat er dus een dak op moet. Maar ergens vermoed ik van wel.
 
In dat geval: Kom maar op met die wereldrecords buitenbaan! Sommige komen nog van dat snelle EK in 2007 en mogen er dus wel een keertje aan gaan.

Wat is de strekking van de brief dan? "willen jullie alstjealstjealsteblief die baan opknappen en dan komen we wel een keer met een wereldbeker langs". Als dat het is, is het toch gewoon een bedelbrief waarvan de kans enorm is dat hij in de papierversnipperaar verdwijnt. En wat is dan het doel van de ISU hierbij? Astana heeft toch al een prima baan?

Medeo is de afgelopen pakweg 25 jaar al meerdere keren gerenoveerd. Begin deze eeuw zelfs een keer met Japans geld. Later nog eens voor de Aziatische Winterspelen en voor de Universiade.

Interestingly, I read on schaatsforum today that the ISU has sent letters to the mayor of Almaty and the Minister of Sports in Kazakhstan regarding renovation. Should this dialogue be interpreted as the ISU wanting to see major Events held there in the future? I am thinking of both the World Allround and -Sprint Championships and World Cup Events, but perhaps especially the "Outdoor Allround Classics":

An idea that the ISU launched last year, where Medeo was specifically mentioned. Other details were not made public, except that this Event is envisioned as a mass event.
This idea caused the Netherlands to withdraw its proposal at the last Congress to hold the Allround and Sprint World Championships every season instead of just every other season as it is now.

The ISU has hinted at "major changes" to the calendar (not this season). The World Cup Events today have become too massive. Countries travel with too many skaters. The center of gravity of the sport has shifted eastwards. The calendar is too "Europe-centric".

Dat weet ik niet want die heb ik niet gezien. De baan heeft al een renovatieproject, er zit een hele projectgroep op met Kibalko als trekker.

Astana heeft een prachtige baan, Medeo is nostalgisch.

Ik kan misschien volgend jaar september poolshoogte nemen. Mogelijk ben ik dan 2 dagen in Almaty. Maar kans dat ik eerder een Kazak spreek, is groter en laat mijn grote vriend uit Almaty nu meerdere tolken hebben :)
