IT'S 5K TIME Now, hear me out. I have taken some time to write this. Tonight we'll witness a truly one-of-a-kind race for Sweden and particularly for Nils. At least due to the fact that he hasn't skated that many highland races in his career. And it makes me both head over heels excited and a bit worried at the same time. In Salt Lake City, Nils has skated 5k only twice, in 2013 and in 2017. Out of these two, he finished the race only in 2013, when he was 17, finishing in 6:29.713. That was a rather average race with his laps being around 30.7-30.9 on average and with at least 3 laps of 31.0. Now, of course, he was only 17 and I may assume quite inexperienced on a highland, so this isn't really a point of reference for the race we'll be witnessing today. I included Sven's lap times in 2013 just for the reference, so don't take it as a direct comparison between the two: it's more about the reference for the number of laps under 29 seconds. Naturally, Nils would have to go each lap under 29 tonight for the WR, but I digress. So then I looked at Nils' racing history in Calgary and once again, only two 5k's in the career, one in 2013 and another in 2017. Took the latter for analysis as the most recent. Even though that race for a PR and an NR, with the laps between 29.5 and 30.2 it was less than impressive. Included Sven's and Ted-Jan's races for the same reference reasons as above. The conclusion? It's going to be very, very interesting. With little experience on the highland, lack of history of any steady and well-paced races and a total of zero laps under 29 on 5k in both SLC and Calgary, I understand Jochem Uytdehaage's skepticism about Nils... but I'm not Jochem and I love Nils so damn much that I'll just vest my hopes with him yet again and let him just have his fun. Spoiler: table
Ik heb hem niet doorgelezen, maar mijn eigen lijst net even ingevuld, en Llop staat momenteel te laag in de ranking om zich rechtstreeks te plaatsen op de 500. Mocht dat in zijn tweet staan dan klopt het dus
A PR for Jansman!! Three last laps above 29, with a really dead last lap but overall we're looking at a 29 s lap time scheme... and this is only the first pair. UPD: i'm aware 29-ers are quite a standard for SLC but still i can see it coming
sweskating_org on IG is already holding a competition for the most precise timing prediction for Nils quite fun to watch upd: honestly the Swedish skating accounts have never been as popular and active as they are now -- basically it's the Swedish skating renaissance
