I don't know about ISU plans, but fact - ISU introduce marathons in ISU rules for the first time, and called it 'one day competetion'

Rule 253c "For one day competitions see the special rules in the respective ISU Communication"

What I was thinking about when I read this? More commercialized formats in the sport of speedskating...
And, yes : I was thinking about a supersprint event in the World Cup from time to time and in championships, but also combinations 500+ 1000 on a quite regularly basis since these distances occur on almost each WC Week End. Never mind that this would not be 100% fair with its inner- and outer lanes: Its an additional spice counting in a Grand World Cup,,,

nobody cares about a Grand World Cup.

Should have developed the idea of a Grand World Cup instead of skipping it...
A samalog cup. Each World Cup sees a 1500 and 5000 (and 500 and 1000). Two-dimensional excitement you formerly saw in allround tournaments. Not so much anymore, because single distance wins doesnt mean so much as before. Why not in the World Cup? Two-dimensional excitement wanted.

Die Grand World Cup is geprobeerd en mislukt. Net als de 100m. Niet teveel moeite meer in steken. De World Cup gewoon netjes per afstand houden.

The 100m-idea should also have been developed instead of skipped...
To reward those who perform on an A-level both on 500/1000 or 1500/5000 doesnt seem so odd to me. Neither for the skaters I assume. The question is if the organizers can cope with it. (Maybe you dutch could help them out?)
The sponsor problem in the sport of speedskating is closely linked to the product.

The 6th of february 2019 we will know more about the format of the one-WK-each-season.
It has recently become more likely that we will end up with an alternating model like, but with opposite programmes to, the EK and 4k(?) In order to compensate for what will be lost: Is it possible to imagine that the World Cup could include audience friendly samalog-events? (the present qualifications are "just paperwork"). Since the World Cup started in the eighties, the assumtion is that single distances are the future of speedskating. Thats how the narrative has been ever since apart from the introduction of team events, mass start, and implied a couple of half heartedly attempts to promote samalog events.
The roots of speedskating are samalogs AND important single distances simoultainously. Why not bring that sucessful formula to the forefront again ? But with a modern twist:
Things have shifted towards bigger emphazis on single distances, and thus the allround aspect could be added in each of the World Cup Competitions of today as an extra spice.
Personally, I like the new rule of a free draw of the currently 6 best skaters at every A-division race, but what about if the last pair in each samalog-event, 2nd (and the occational 3rd) distance consisted of the best from the first of two distances? The samalog events are 500+1000, and 1500+5000/3000. The contest is as mentioned earlier for skaters that have present A-status on both distances in the actual Event. I have not had time to check how often we would see the same skaters in the last pair with such a system, nor how many skaters that fulfill the A-criteria from Event to Event, but could such a thing work, and bring additional excitement to each, and every World Cup Competition?
As an additional spice, I dont see a big obstacle in the unfairness of the inner- and outer problems regarding one 500 and one 1000. Neither that the sprinters have a combination more than the allrounders. The sprint event involve more racers and the competition are fiercer.
As a final comment on these initial thoughts; I find it strange that we only see the allrounders perform an important 500 in championships. Why not point at one or possibly two World Cup Events each season with a 500.1500-5000 combination? One could simply add some pairs to the first 500 for the sprinters for those skaters with current A-status on both the 1500 and 5000/3000.

    Hmmm, merely just samalogs.
Allthough your participation is highly appreciated, I 'll continu in Dutch.

Of andersom.

    :)
Its not all about medal-grabbing, but entertainment also. Of course you cant distingguish sharply between the two. In Norway speedskating has got more attention recently because of nice results, but HOW BIG this sport can become again depends in my opinion of what kind of measures ISU will be issuing in not a too far future.
